How PTE Academic scores work

Pearson's description of the score you receive.

The scale
You will receive an overall score of between 10 and 90, with 90 being the highest possible score. You will also get individual scores for your communicative skills to identify your strengths and areas for improvement.
Who marks it
You won't interact with a human examiner, reducing the risk of human bias. Some responses are also reviewed by a human expert before the automated score is finalised.

Scores are graded against the Global Scale of English (GSE).

The scores changed in August 2025

The same name, a different test.

PTE Academic has the same name as the previous version of the test that was accepted before 7 August 2025. However, the test and scores are different. Pearson's own scoring page says: DHA score requirements have recently changed. See every dated change.

Home Affairs says results from a test taken before 7 August 2025 may be used until a date that depends on the visa, no later than 6 August 2028. A PTE score also has Pearson's own two-year limit, explained on the results page. The last table below is the older one.

How PTE lines up with IELTS

Pearson says its IELTS concordance has been updated based on research published in July 2025. We will also publish updated relationships with other test providers (e.g. TOEFL) over the coming months.

Which visa uses which level

Home Affairs sets the level on each visa page.

Competent English
The minimum Home Affairs names for the 189, 190 and 186 visas. See the 189 page.
Temporary Graduate (485)
Has its own table with an overall score as well as per-skill minimums. PTE Academic is 55 overall. See the 485 page.
Student visa (500)
Uses an overall score by course type, not these levels. See the 500 page.
Points test
Proficient is worth 10 points and Superior 20. See PTE points for PR.

Taken on or before 6 August 2025

Home Affairs: results from the previous version of each test may still be valid, depending on the visa subclass.

Common questions

For tests from 7 August 2025, Home Affairs lists PTE Academic minimums per skill: Competent 47/48/51/54, Proficient 58/59/69/76, Superior 69/70/85/88 in listening, reading, writing and speaking.

At least 47 in listening, 48 in reading, 51 in writing and 54 in speaking. There is no overall PTE score at this level.

You will receive an overall score of between 10 and 90, with 90 being the highest possible score. You will also get individual scores for your communicative skills to identify your strengths and areas for improvement.

Home Affairs says PTE Academic has the same name as the previous version of the test, but the test and scores are different. It publishes one table for tests taken on or after 7 August 2025 and another for tests on or before 6 August 2025.

They are three English levels Home Affairs defines by test scores, worth 0, 10 and 20 points. For PTE Academic the per-skill minimums are 47/48/51/54, 58/59/69/76 and 69/70/85/88.

Pearson's July 2025 concordance puts IELTS 7.0 at 63-70 PTE overall. Home Affairs asks for per-skill minimums, which differ by level: see the table above.

You achieved one of the test scores in Table 1 or Table 2, in the 3 years before your visa application, depending on the visa subclass. Pearson separately says a PTE Academic score is valid for two years from the test date.

Pearson's concordance puts the PTE Academic overall range for IELTS 6.0 at 47-54, IELTS 6.5 at 55-62, IELTS 7.0 at 63-70, IELTS 7.5 at 71-78 and IELTS 8.0 at 79-85. Pearson describes the study this way: “In 2024, Pearson carried out a concordance study between the updated PTE Academic and IELTS Academic test. This study follows all established best practice criteria and is based on a large, representative sample of 1,522 test takers”. Each skill has its own range as well, and a visa is decided skill by skill, so use the PTE vs IELTS table for the per-skill ranges. Pearson also says: “Governments and institutions decide which tests to accept and which score requirements to set.”

Yes. The PTE and IELTS converter turns an IELTS band into the PTE overall range and a PTE overall score into the IELTS band, using Pearson's concordance. It does not predict a score from practice answers; it only converts a result you already have.

Pearson says: “You will receive an overall score of between 10 and 90, with 90 being the highest possible score.” It adds: “You will also get individual scores for your communicative skills to identify your strengths and areas for improvement.” and “Scores are graded against the Global Scale of English (GSE).” On who marks it, Pearson says: “Some responses are also reviewed by a human expert before the automated score is finalised” This page quotes Pearson's own scoring page and does not publish a marks-per-question table of its own.

Pearson's rescore policy says: “To request a rescore, please phone the Customer Support team within 14 calendar days of your score being made available to you.” “The fee for requesting a rescore is $160 USD.” “While the PTE test is a machine-scored test, a rescore is carried out by a human scorer.” “You can only request a rescore once per test registration.” “If your overall or communicative skills scores change, the rescore fee will be refunded.” Note the warning: “If your score changes, it will overwrite your old score, and you will no longer be able to use your previous score.” The full policy is on the PTE results and validity page.

Pearson says: “Governments and institutions decide which tests to accept and which score requirements to set.” So the score you need is the minimum set by the visa or the university you are applying to. For Australian visas the minimum is set by English level: Functional, Vocational, Competent, Proficient and Superior English.

Pearson says: “Some responses are also reviewed by a human expert before the automated score is finalised” The clearest published example is the essay. Pearson says: “Your response on Write Essay is judged on our ability to write a persuasive or argumentative essay on a given topic. Your score is based on seven factors:” Content, Development, structure and coherence, Form, General linguistic range, Grammar usage and mechanics, Vocabulary range and Spelling. Pearson adds: “This question type uses partial credit scoring. No credit is given for no response, an irrelevant response or an unoriginal response. You must use your own words.” On how skills overlap, Pearson says: “This part of the test contains five different question types. Because PTE Academic is an integrated skills test, one item type ('Reading and Writing: Fill in the blanks') also assesses writing skills.” Each skill gets its own score: “You will also get individual scores for your communicative skills to identify your strengths and areas for improvement.” The Pearson pages we read do not publish a table of marks per question type, so this site does not show one. The PTE Academic test format page lists the question types.

On some question types, yes, but only on some. For Highlight Incorrect Words, Pearson says: “For any wrong options chosen, one point is deducted, while correct options are given one point.” It adds: “This is the third of three question types where you can lose points if you choose any incorrect options.” For PTE Core, Pearson's score guide says: “If responses are correct, 1 score point will be given, but if they are incorrect, no points are awarded.” That guide covers PTE Core, so check the question type you are practising on the PTE Academic test format page.

Pearson says: “You will receive an overall score of between 10 and 90, with 90 being the highest possible score.” Each skill is scored as well: “You will also get individual scores for your communicative skills to identify your strengths and areas for improvement.” In Pearson's IELTS concordance the top band, IELTS 9.0, sits at 90 on the PTE overall scale. What counts as a high score depends on who asks. Home Affairs sets the minimum for each English level, and the points test goes up to Superior English.

Pearson describes the scale this way: “You will receive an overall score of between 10 and 90, with 90 being the highest possible score.” Two things changed around it. Pearson says: “our concordance with IELTS has been updated based on research published in July 2025” Home Affairs says: “On 7 August 2025, the English language tests approved for Australian visa purposes changed.” and “PTE Academic has the same name as the previous version of the test that was accepted before 7 August 2025. However, the test and scores are different.” Because Home Affairs says the test and scores are different, check the date on any older chart before you rely on it. The PTE requirement changes page lists each dated change.

Home Affairs sets a PTE score for each skill at each English level. For tests taken after the change, its Competent English table is headed: “Table 1 - Competent English approved tests and scores taken on or after 7 August 2025” The per-level pages show every skill: Competent, Proficient and Superior. Pearson's IELTS concordance also has a range for each skill. For IELTS 6.5 it gives overall 55-62, listening 53-57, reading 54-58, speaking 66-75 and writing 60-68. Pearson says: “our concordance with IELTS has been updated based on research published in July 2025”

Nurses register through Ahpra and the National Boards, not through a visa, so the Home Affairs tables on this page do not set that score. Ahpra says: “Minimum test scores for tests taken on or after 23 April 2026.” For PTE Academic the minimum is: “Overall: 63 Listening: 58 Reading: 59 Writing: 60 Speaking: 76” Ahpra also says: “All National Boards (except the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practice Board of Australia) accept the same English tests and require the same minimum scores.” and “English language test results are valid for two years before the date you lodge your application for registration.” For earlier tests, Ahpra's heading is: “Minimum test scores and requirements for tests taken on or before 22 April 2026.” The full table, with the rule on combining sittings, is on English scores for nurses, midwives and doctors.
