02Pick the test that fitsHome Affairs lists each test's overall minimum in one table. Compare yours in the checker above.
03Register TOEFL correctlyFrom 21 January 2026, applicants must select ‘Taking TOEFL for Australia’ during registration, or the result may not be valid for Australian visa purposes.

It depends on your course. For tests taken on or after 7 August 2025 the base minimum is PTE Academic 47, IELTS 6.0, TOEFL iBT 67 and CELPIP General 7.
Home Affairs lowers the minimum if your main course comes with at least 10 weeks of ELICOS, a Foundation program or an eligible Pathway program, and lowers it again with at least 20 weeks of ELICOS.
Home Affairs: you might need to provide evidence of your English language skills when you submit your visa application. Use the Document Checklist tool on their site to find out whether you do.
The table Home Affairs publishes lists an overall score for each test and no per-skill scores.
Home Affairs: “From 2 October 2026, there are new rules for Student visas (subclass 500) and Student Guardian visas (subclass 590). The rules change who can apply for and be granted a visa while in Australia, and whether family members can be included in a Student visa application.” It also says: “Make sure you know how the new rules affect you before making visa, study, travel or relocation plans.” This page covers the English test scores only, not who can apply from inside Australia or whether family can be included, so read the official Student visa page before you plan.
