Who does not need a test

Home Affairs lists five exemptions for the Core Skills and Specialist Skills streams.

  • You are a passport holder from Canada, New Zealand, the Republic of Ireland, the United Kingdom or the United States of America.
  • You completed at least 5 years of full-time study at secondary level or higher, with most classes in English. Home Affairs asks for the institution, the qualification, an official transcript, contact hours in English and the years of study.
  • Your nominated occupation will be performed at a diplomatic or consular mission of another country, or at an Office of the Authorities of Taiwan.
  • Your occupation needs a licence, registration or membership, and you had to prove English equal to or higher than the table to be granted it.
  • You are an employee of an overseas business that has nominated you, and you will receive guaranteed annual earnings of at least AUD 96,400.

Online tests are not approved

The Department does not accept evidence from English language tests where an entire test is delivered online (also known as “remote-proctored” or “at-home”). Examples Home Affairs names: CELPIP Online, IELTS Online, LANGUAGECERT Academic Online, OET@Home, MET Digital (taken at-home), TOEFL iBT – Home Edition.

For the Labour agreement stream the rule is different: You must have English language skills suitable to perform your nominated occupation. English requirements may be specified in the Labour agreement between your employer and the Commonwealth.

For tests taken on or after 13 September 2025, at least 33 in listening, 36 in reading, 29 in writing and 24 in speaking. The table sets no overall PTE score.

A separate table applies. For PTE Academic Home Affairs says: “Academic overall test score of at least 36 with a score of at least 36 in each of the test components.” It must be one sitting.

Home Affairs: you must take the test within 3 years before you apply for the subclass 482 visa.

Home Affairs: “If your test offers a single skill retake option, we may accept your result for that skill.” For results from before 13 September 2025, single skill retake results are not accepted.
