What is PTE? Definition and what PTE stands for
PTE stands for Pearson Test of English, an English language test made by Pearson. It has two versions: PTE Academic, used for study and for Australian visas, and PTE Core, used for Canadian immigration.
People ask what PTE means because the name covers two different tests. This page gives the definition from Pearson's own guides, explains the difference between PTE Academic and PTE Core, and says which government accepts which. It is not advice on which to take. The immigration department's page decides.
What PTE stands for
Pearson Test of English.
PTE stands for Pearson Test of English. Pearson is the company that makes it, and the test is an English language test taken on a computer. Pearson's own score guides give the full name and a one-line definition for each of its two versions.
"Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic is an international, computer-based English language test."
Pearson says what the Academic test is for: it helps education institutions, professional organisations and government organisations that need a standard of academic English for admission.
"It provides a measure of your language ability in order to assist education institutions and professional and government organizations that require a standard of academic English language proficiency for admission purposes."
The other version has a different purpose. Pearson's Core guide ties it to immigration.
"Pearson Test of English (PTE) Core is an international computer-based English language test. It provides a measure of your language ability in order to assist government organizations (such as Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) that require a standard of English language proficiency for immigration purposes."
Two tests, one name
PTE Academic and PTE Core are different tests for different jobs.
When people say PTE they usually mean one of two tests. The names are almost the same, so they are easy to mix up. Pearson's own FAQ draws the line.
"PTE Academic and PTE Core are designed for different visa pathways: PTE Academic is used for university admissions (including in Canada), and migration visas to Australia and New Zealand. PTE Core is used just for Canadian permanent residency and citizenship visas."
| Question | PTE Academic | PTE Core |
|---|---|---|
| What Pearson says it is | A computer-based academic English test for study, migration or work abroad. A 4-skills test. | A 2-hour, computer-based test that assesses general English skills. |
| Used for | University admission, and migration visas to Australia and New Zealand | Canadian permanent residency and citizenship |
| Content | Questions reflect language you might hear in an academic setting | General English you might use every day in a workplace or community |
Pearson also says what they share: both are 4-skills tests, both are taken on a computer at a test centre, and both use similar scoring methods.
"Both tests are 4-skills tests (assessing speaking, writing, reading, and listening skills), are taken on a computer at a test center, and use similar scoring methods."
Pearson's advice for choosing is blunt. To study in Canada, take PTE Academic. For a Canadian migration visa, take PTE Core.
"In essence, if you want to apply for a migration visa in Canada, choose PTE Core. If you wish to study in Canada, choose PTE Academic."
Who accepts PTE
Pearson's claims, and what the governments themselves say.
Pearson says PTE Academic is accepted by Home Affairs, Australia's immigration department, for all visa categories and by every Australian university. That is Pearson describing its own test.
"Accepted by the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) for all visa categories and 100% of Australian universities."
Home Affairs itself lists PTE Academic among the tests it accepts when taken at a secure test centre, and it warns that the new PTE Academic has the same name as the earlier test with different scores.
"PTE Academic has the same name as the test available from 7 August 2025, however, the test and scores are different."
In Canada, the department in charge is IRCC. It lists PTE Core, not PTE Academic, among the tests it designates for immigration.
"Pearson Test of English (PTE) Core The PTE Core test is accepted by IRCC for immigration and citizenship purposes."
Pearson's PTE Core page adds that a Canadian university or college will want PTE Academic instead.
"Plan to study in Canada? If you plan to apply to a Canadian university or college, you'll need PTE Academic instead of PTE Core."
How long it takes
About two hours, and two Pearson pages that do not quite agree.
Both tests are described as taking about two hours. For PTE Academic, Pearson's test page says you can test all your language skills in just 2 hours at a test centre. Pearson's Academic score guide says the test is a maximum of 2 hours 15 minutes long. Both are Pearson's wording, so we show both.
| Pearson page | What it says about the length of PTE Academic |
|---|---|
| PTE Academic test page | All your language skills in just 2 hours at a test center |
| PTE Academic score guide | A maximum of 2 hours 15 minutes long |
For PTE Core, Pearson's score guide says the test is 2 hours long. Its test-format page splits the time into three parts.
| PTE Core part | Time Pearson gives |
|---|---|
| Part 1, Speaking and Writing | Around 50 minutes |
| Part 2, Reading | Around 30 minutes |
| Part 3, Listening | Around 30 minutes |

Scoring and results
AI and human scoring, and results in about two days.
Pearson says PTE results usually arrive in just 2 days, and that you can share them with any institution for free. Its help pages say most test takers get PTE Academic results within two business days and, in some cases, up to five business days. For PTE Core you can share your score with IRCC using a Score Report Code or send it from your myPTE account.
"Receive your results usually in just 2 days and share them with any institutions for free."
On scoring, Pearson says it combines AI scoring with human expertise to reduce bias. That is Pearson's claim about its own test. For PTE Academic, Pearson's score guide says the overall score ranges between 10-90 points.
"AI scoring combined with human expertise means less biased testing"
Our PTE score chart shows how the score maps to Home Affairs levels, and our PTE Core score chart does the same for Canada's CLB levels.
