IELTS Academic vs General Training: which one for Australia

SHORT ANSWER

IELTS Academic is for university study and professional registration. IELTS General Training is for work, secondary study and migration. Listening and Speaking are identical, Reading and Writing Task 1 differ, and in the Home Affairs tables we checked, either version is accepted at the same scores.

The two tests share a name, a nine-band scale and a face-to-face Speaking test. They differ in what you read and what you write, and that decides which one a university, a visa or a registration board asks for. This page puts the two side by side using IDP's, IELTS's and Home Affairs' own words, then says how to choose.

NOT ADVICERequirements change. Confirm on the official Home Affairs page before you book a test or lodge your application.

What each test is for

In the words of the people who run it.

SOURCE, VERBATIM
"The choice of test depends on where you intend to use your test score. The IELTS Academic test is usually for entry into university. IELTS General Training on the other hand is used for migration purposes. The organisation where you plan to work or study sets the requirements."
IDP IELTS Australia says: ielts.com.au

IDP, which runs IELTS in Australia, describes the two tests like this. We have left the wording as IDP wrote it, so you can see exactly who it thinks each test is for.

ItemIELTS AcademicIELTS General Training
What IDP says it isIELTS Academic is an English language test designed for people who want to study at university, apply for professional registration, or work in academic and healthcare environments in Australia and other English-speaking countries.IELTS General Training tests your English language proficiency in a practical, everyday context. The tasks and tests reflect both workplace and social situations.
Take it if you want toStudy at an undergraduate level or above. Get a job that requires professional registration (for example, doctors, nurses, teachers or lawyers).Migrate to Australia, New Zealand, or another English-speaking country. Study or train below degree level.

The Australian Department of Home Affairs does not sort tests by these labels. In the tables we checked it lists both versions side by side, with the same scores. That is covered below, and it is the part that settles most Australian cases.

What is the same and what is different

Two parts match. Reading and the first Writing task do not.

Both versions have four parts: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. IDP says the Listening and Speaking parts are the same in the two tests. The Reading passages and Writing Task 1 are where you will notice the difference.

Part of the testIELTS AcademicIELTS General Training
ListeningSame test for both versions.Same test for both versions.
Reading textsFor each section you will be given one long reading passage with tasks. You will be presented with five or six texts of varying length with tasks.
Reading length (IELTS.org)Number of sections: 3; the total text length is 2150–2750 wordsNumber of sections: 3; the total text length is 2150–2375 words
Writing Task 1You are given a graph, table, chart, or diagram and are asked to describe the visual information in your own words. You are asked to write at least 150 words in about 20 minutes. You respond to a situation, for example, by writing a letter asking for information or explaining a situation. You are asked to write at least 150 words in about 20 minutes.
Writing Task 2You are given a point of view, argument or problem which you need to discuss. You are asked to write at least 250 words in about 40 minutes. The same task as Academic: you are given a point of view, argument or problem which you need to discuss. You are asked to write at least 250 words in about 40 minutes.
SpeakingSame test for both versions.Same test for both versions.

How long each part takes

IDP's format page gives these timings for both versions. The total is 2 hours and 45 minutes. You sit Listening, Reading and Writing in one go, and your Speaking test can be on the same day or up to a week either side, depending on your centre.

PartWhat IDP says
ListeningDuration: Approximately 30 minutes Consists of 40 questions based on four audio recordings
ReadingDuration: Approximately 60 minutes Consists of three reading passages or texts
WritingDuration: Approximately 60 minutes Consists of two tasks: Task 1 and Task 2
SpeakingDuration: Approximately between 11 and 14 minutes
OUR ORIGINAL EXAMPLE, NOT FROM A TEST OWNER

Our reading: Academic Reading asks you to cope with longer, more argued passages. General Training Reading asks you to work through more, shorter, everyday texts such as notices and handbooks. Neither is a shortcut. If you read English news and reports easily, Academic Reading will feel natural. If you read mostly instructions and messages, the General Training texts will feel closer to home.

Scoring: one scale, but Reading marks are not worth the same

The same band takes more correct answers on General Training.

SOURCE, VERBATIM
"The IELTS Academic and General Training Reading tests are graded on the same scale. The Academic Reading test may contain texts which feature more difficult vocabulary or greater complexity of style. It is usual that a greater number of questions must be answered correctly on a General Training Reading test to secure a given band score."
IELTS.org says: ielts.org

That last sentence is the one most people miss. Both tests report on the same 9-band scale, but the Reading marks you need are different. IELTS publishes these average marks out of 40:

BandAcademic Reading marksGeneral Training Reading marks
Band 4Not listed15
Band 51523
Band 62330
Band 73035
Band 835Not listed

Read across one row to see the effect. A raw score of 30 out of 40 in Reading is band 7 on the Academic test and band 6 on General Training. IELTS adds that these are averages: the exact marks vary slightly from one test version to the next. For the full table, mark by mark, see our IELTS band score chart.

Listening and Speaking are scored the same way in both versions, and Writing is marked against the same four criteria in both. So the Reading marks are the main scoring difference. Neither owner says one version is easier overall, so choose by what you need and what suits you.

What Home Affairs accepts

Both versions, at the same scores, in the tables we checked.

SOURCE, VERBATIM
"International English Language Testing System Academic (IELTS Academic), including One Skill Retake (OSR) International English Language Testing System General Training (IELTS General Training), including One Skill Retake (OSR)"
Home Affairs says (tests taken on or after 7 August 2025): immi.homeaffairs.gov.au

Home Affairs lists IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training as two separate accepted tests, and it accepts One Skill Retake on both for eligible visas. Check the visa page, and for the Temporary Graduate visa finish any One Skill Retake before you lodge. Then, for each English level it asks about, it sets the same scores for both versions. Here are the levels it uses for tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, with the IELTS result it asks for:

Home Affairs English levelIELTS AcademicIELTS General Training
Superior EnglishAt least 8 in each of the 4 componentsAt least 8 in each of the 4 components
Proficient EnglishAt least 7 in each of the 4 componentsAt least 7 in each of the 4 components
Competent EnglishAt least 6 in each of the 4 componentsAt least 6 in each of the 4 components
Vocational EnglishAt least 5 in each of the 4 componentsAt least 5 in each of the 4 components
Functional EnglishAn average band score of at least 4.5An average band score of at least 4.5

The same pattern holds for the student visa. On the subclass 500 table for tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training both show 6.0 as the minimum. Both show 5.5 if the principal course is accompanied by at least 10 weeks of ELICOS, a Foundation (Standard/Extended) program or an eligible Pathway program, and 5.0 if it is accompanied by at least 20 weeks of ELICOS. ELICOS means English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students, and Home Affairs says the 10 and 20 weeks are a minimum. Home Affairs gives these as overall scores.

IDP puts a different point: "The IELTS General Training test is the only non-academic test of English accepted for migration to Australia." Both statements are true together. General Training is the only non-academic option, and it is not the only accepted option. Academic results are accepted too for the visas above, which is why a student who already holds Academic can often use it.

SOURCE, VERBATIM
"The department does not accept evidence from English language tests that are delivered completely online (also known as 'remote-proctored' or 'at-home')."
Home Affairs says: immi.homeaffairs.gov.au

That rule catches people out. IELTS Online, the version you take at home, is not accepted for Australian visas. Book a test at a test centre.

SOURCE, VERBATIM
"On 7 August 2025, the English language tests approved for Australian visa purposes changed. If you completed a test before this date, your results may still be valid for up to 3 years."
Home Affairs says: immi.homeaffairs.gov.au

That 3 years is Home Affairs' general line, and its own pages give shorter windows for some cases. Its Student visa page asks for a test completed within the 2 years before you lodged your application (or, at Streamlined Evidence level, within the 2 years before a decision is made). Its functional English page asks for a test result from the 12 months before your visa application. Check the page for your visa subclass before you rely on an older result.

485 visa: General or Academic?

Either. Home Affairs gives the two the same minimums.

A common question is about the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485), Post-Higher Education Work stream. Home Affairs' table for tests taken on or after 7 August 2025 has one column for IELTS Academic and one for IELTS General Training. The numbers in the two columns are identical.

"In the 12 months immediately before the day you apply for your visa, you must have scored one of the specified results below."
Home Affairs says: immi.homeaffairs.gov.au
SOURCE, VERBATIM
"Acceptable minimum scores – Test taken on or after 7 August 2025"
Home Affairs says: immi.homeaffairs.gov.au

So for the 485 you can book whichever version suits you. These are the scores for most applicants: Home Affairs says you can instead show evidence that you are a citizen of, and hold a valid passport from, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, New Zealand or the Republic of Ireland, and it gives holders of British National (Overseas) or Hong Kong passports a separate table with lower IELTS minimums. Our reading: you studied in English at an Australian university, so Academic content (graphs, argued texts) is probably familiar. If you would rather write a letter than describe a chart, General Training may suit you better, and you will need more correct Reading answers for the same band. Either way, check the score table on Home Affairs' own 485 page the week you book, because the department sets it.

Universities, nurses, doctors and other registrations

Here the version often matters.

SOURCE, VERBATIM
"Some organisations specifically require IELTS Academic results rather than General Training, especially for higher education and professional registration pathways."
IDP IELTS Australia says: ielts.com.au

Universities and professional bodies set their own rules, and many name the Academic test. The clearest Australian example is health registration. Ahpra, the health practitioner regulator, publishes this about the tests the National Boards accept:

SOURCE, VERBATIM
"IELTS Academic - International English Language Testing System (Academic – paper and computer at test centre only)"
Ahpra says: ahpra.gov.au

Ahpra's list of accepted tests names IELTS Academic only. It does not list General Training. If you are registering with one of the National Boards, such as a nurse or a doctor, book Academic and check your Board's page. Our Ahpra English requirements page has the scores.

SOURCE, VERBATIM
"IELTS Academic and General Training are two wholly separate types of test, for two different purposes. While some individual organisations may accept an Academic result in the place of General Training, this decision is up to them. You will need to contact your specific organisation to learn more."
IDP IELTS Australia says: ielts.com.au

For anything that is not a visa or health registration, ask the organisation which version it wants and write the answer down. If the requirement says only "IELTS", ask in writing whether Academic or General Training. A one-line email now is cheaper than a second test.

What changed recently

Paper is gone in Australia, and the visa score tables moved in 2025.

SOURCE, VERBATIM
"IDP no longer offers the IELTS on paper test in Australia. You can still take your IELTS, the world's most trusted English language test, on computer."
IDP IELTS Australia says: ielts.com.au

IDP's update page says paper test dates ran in Australia only until 28 June 2026. That affects both versions. It is the same test, delivered on a computer. IDP says nothing changes in content or scoring.

SOURCE, VERBATIM
"There are no changes if you book your IELTS on computer. The content, difficulty, and scoring (0-9 band scale) remain the same."
IDP IELTS Australia says: ielts.com.au

If you prefer to write by hand, IDP's preparation hub describes an IELTS on computer (Writing on Paper) option in which you handwrite your Writing tasks. Check that your centre offers it when you book.

Two other changes matter for visa applicants. Home Affairs changed its list of approved tests on 7 August 2025, and it has accepted IELTS One Skill Retake for eligible visas since 14 December 2022. And one thing has not changed: the fee is the same for both versions. Our IELTS voucher codes page covers what IDP does and does not discount.

SOURCE, VERBATIM
"The cost for an IELTS English test in Australia is $490. The price for the test is the same whether you take IELTS General Training or IELTS Academic."

How to choose

Five steps, in order.

If you need IELTS forWhich version, and why
Undergraduate or postgraduate studyUsually Academic. IDP lists study at an undergraduate level or above under Academic.
Registration as a nurse, doctor or other health practitionerAcademic. Ahpra's list of accepted tests names IELTS Academic only.
A student visa, a Temporary Graduate visa or the Home Affairs English levelsEither. Home Affairs lists both versions at the same scores in the tables above.
Study or training below degree levelGeneral Training. IDP lists it under General Training.
Migration or work in an English-speaking countryGeneral Training is the version IDP lists for migration. Home Affairs also accepts Academic, as above.
OUR ORIGINAL EXAMPLE, NOT FROM A TEST OWNER
  1. Find the exact wording of the requirement: the visa page, the university entry page or the registration standard. Copy the test name as written.
  2. If it names one version, book that version. If it lists both with the same scores, you are free to choose.
  3. If you are free to choose, compare your own strengths. Do you describe charts and write essays comfortably, or do you write letters and handle everyday texts better?
  4. Remember that the same Reading band takes more correct answers on General Training. Aim a little higher on practice scores if you pick it.
  5. Book a computer test at a test centre. Do not rely on a home test for a visa or registration.

If you have already booked the wrong version, IDP says you can change a booking once, free of charge, before your original test date, and that changing the module, from Academic to General Training or the other way round, counts as a change. IDP says the rules apply to bookings made on or after 1 July 2025.

This page is a plain summary of what the owners say, not migration advice. The visa page, the university and the registration board decide, so use their wording over ours. When you know which version you need, our IELTS courses page lists the free and paid ways to prepare for it.

Common questions

Listening and Speaking are the same. The Reading passages differ, and so does Writing Task 1. In Academic you describe a graph, table, chart or diagram. In General Training you write a letter. Task 2, the essay, is the same in both.

IELTS says the Academic Reading test may contain more difficult vocabulary or greater complexity of style, and that it is usual for a greater number of questions to be answered correctly on General Training to secure a given band. So it is not simply easier. Choose the version your visa or institution asks for, then practise the Reading and Writing Task 1 style of that version.

Home Affairs lists both IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485), Post-Higher Education Work stream, with the same minimums for most applicants: 6.5 overall and 5.5 in each of the 4 parts, for tests taken on or after 7 August 2025. Home Affairs lets citizens who hold a valid passport from the UK, US, Canada, New Zealand or Ireland show the passport instead, and gives British National (Overseas) and Hong Kong passport holders a separate, lower table.

For the Home Affairs English levels, yes: it accepts both versions at the same scores. IDP adds that IELTS Academic and General Training are two wholly separate types of test, for two different purposes, and that some organisations accept an Academic result in place of General Training, but this decision is up to them.

No. IDP says the cost for an IELTS English test in Australia is $490 and that the price is the same whether you take General Training or Academic. In some locations the fee can be slightly higher.

Ahpra's accepted-tests list names IELTS Academic (paper and computer at test centre only). It does not list General Training.

No. IDP says IELTS on paper is no longer available in Australia and all tests are on computer. It also describes a Writing on Paper option within the computer test, so check your centre.
