IELTS results in Canada: result calculator, TRF number, results time and re-marks
IELTS on computer results usually arrive within 1 to 5 days. IDP Canada says typically within 48 hours on one page and as little as 3 business days on another, and the British Council says 1 to 2 days. Results do not come out at a set time of day. Your overall band is the average of your four section scores rounded to the nearest half band, and the TRF number sits on your Test Report Form and in your online account.
IELTS in Canada is run by more than one organiser, so the answer to "where are my results" depends on who you booked with. This page puts the IDP Canada, British Council and test centre statements side by side, shows where they differ, and adds a result calculator of our own for the overall band. Every rule is quoted from the page it came from.
How long IELTS results take in Canada
Computer-based IELTS: one to five days, depending on who says it.
The pages below do not give one single figure for computer-based IELTS, because each describes its own organiser or test centre. We show all of them and leave the choice of which applies to you to your booking.
| Who says it | What the page says |
|---|---|
| IDP Canada, results page | If you take IELTS on a computer, you will get your results typically within 48 hours of taking your test. |
| IDP Canada, FAQ | Results for IELTS on computer tests are now typically available in 2 days! |
| IDP Canada, home page | Receive your test results in as little as 3 business days with IELTS on computer |
| IDP, all-countries results page | You can preview your IELTS results online typically within 1 to 5 days for IELTS on computer or on the 13th day for IELTS on paper. |
| British Council Canada (ielts.ca) | IELTS on Computer taken at a Test Centre: results are typically available within 1 to 2 days. |
| Conestoga IELTS centre (ieltscanada.ca) | Test takers will be able to view unofficial results online within 2-5 business days after the computer-based test and on the 13th day after the paper-based test. |
Our reading: these are not contradictions so much as different promises from different parties. The tightest range is the British Council's 1 to 2 days. The widest is IDP's 1 to 5 days, and the Conestoga centre's 2-5 business days is for the unofficial online result. Plan on the figure your booking confirmation quotes. Treat five days as the outer limit for the online result of a computer test before you ask your centre. If you need IDP Canada's paper Test Report Form, IDP says it posts it 2-5 days after the test and that mail in Canada usually takes 3-6 business days, so allow time for both. One Canadian centre, Conestoga, says regular post may take up to 6 weeks, and IELTS.org gives 6-8 days for IELTS Online results.
What time of day do IELTS results come out?
People also ask at what time IELTS results are declared in Canada. The British Council's Canadian page answers it directly.
"Although IELTS results do not come out at a specific time of day, results are typically available within 1 to 2 days after the exam date for IELTS on Computer."
There is one fixed time in the sources, and it is for paper tests. IDP's page for all countries says:
"Your IELTS on paper results will be available online at 12:00 am GMT on the 13th day after the test."
For computer tests, IDP Canada says your centre will tell you when the result is ready.
"Your Test Centre will notify you when they become available."
Computer-based IELTS with Writing on Paper
Some test takers do the Reading and Listening on a computer and handwrite the Writing test. The IELTS owners publish a separate timing for that option, which they describe as available in selected countries. The British Council's global results page gives a different figure for the same option, 13 days after the test date, so confirm the timing with your test centre.
"You will receive your results within five days of your test date."
Where to look: IDP, the British Council or your centre
Your booking decides which account holds the result.
The IELTS owners explain the split in one paragraph. Look at how you registered.
"If you registered through the British Council, you will receive an email with a link to view your IELTS scores. If you registered through IDP, you can access your IELTS results on your IDP account."
"To access your results online you will need your passport or ID number (the same ID you used when you registered for the test) and your candidate number."
Keep the confirmation email from your booking. It tells you who ran the test, which is the one fact you need to pick the right section below. Some Canadian centres, such as Conestoga's IELTS centre, run their own results page for their candidates.
IDP Canada: preview online, then your Test Report Form
A provisional result first, the official form after.
If you booked with IDP Canada, the sequence on its pages is preview, then post or collect. Each step is IDP's wording.
| Step | What IDP Canada says |
|---|---|
| Preview online | If you have taken the IELTS on computer test, you can preview your results online within 48 hours after your test date. |
| What you need | You’ll need the ID you used to register, personal details, and your test date to retrieve your results. Your results will be available online for 28 days. |
| Status of the preview | The provisional online test results are not considered formal advice of results and must not be considered as the final test result and cannot be used to support any applications, test takers make to recognizing organizations. |
| Official form by post | Your IELTS Test Centre will send you your Test Report Form (TRF) to your postal address. If you have taken the computerized IELTS test, we will post your TRF 2-5 days after your test date. |
| Postal time in Canada | Test results mailed to addresses in Canada are sent by standard Canada Post services and usually take 3-6 business days. |
| Collect it | You may have the option to pick up your Test Report Form from the test centre on the results release day. Please check with your test centre first. |
| Email or phone | No. We are unable to share results via email or phone. |
| Sending it on | When booking your IELTS test, you are given the option to have your IELTS results sent up to 5 nominated institutions at no charge. |
IDP's results page says results can be sent to up to 5 nominated institutions at no charge when you book, but its additional-copies page says postage may be extra, and its Burnaby page says a fee may apply if courier is chosen. Ask your centre what applies.
Read the provisional line twice. A preview is for you. An application to a school, college or government office needs the Test Report Form.
British Council IELTS results in Canada
Test Taker Portal, email link, electronic form.
Searches such as "British Council IELTS test result", "IELTS BC results" and "check IELTS result British Council" all point at one place: the British Council's Test Taker Portal. The British Council runs a Canadian IELTS site at ielts.ca, and its all-countries site says the same thing about results.
"IELTS Results | Check and Access Online | British Council CA"
| Question | What the British Council says |
|---|---|
| How do I find out my result is ready? | You’ll get an email with a link to the Test Taker Portal when they’re ready. |
| Can you tell me by email or phone? | We cannot disclose your IELTS result via email or over the phone. |
| Is the online view my official result? | Your results will be available to view online at your Test Taker Portal after they are released and are valid for two years. These do not provide an official confirmation of your performance, for that, you’ll need your IELTS Test Report Form. |
| How do I get the official form? | If you’ve taken IELTS on Computer: you will receive your results electronically. You can download the electronic version (eTRF) from the Test Taker Portal, typically within 1–2 days after your test. |
| I cannot open the portal | If you can’t view your results in the Test Taker Portal, contact your IELTS Test Centre directly. |
The British Council's computer-based answer is the same electronic route IDP Australia describes on its own pages, where you download an eTRF from your profile. For Canada's IDP pages, see the section above, which describes a posted form, and the next section, which covers the digital TRF that IDP Canada's booking page also mentions.
How to download your IELTS TRF online
It depends on the organiser and the centre.
Whether you can download a TRF at all depends on who ran your test. The sources split three ways.
| Organiser | What its own page says |
|---|---|
| British Council | You can download the electronic version (eTRF) from the Test Taker Portal, typically within 1–2 days after your test. |
| Conestoga IELTS centre | IELTS on Computer test takers can download an unlimited number of their Test Report Form within two years of their test date. |
| IDP Canada results page | If you have taken the computerized IELTS test, we will post your TRF 2-5 days after your test date. |
| IDP Australia, for comparison | For all IELTS tests taken on computer, you will receive this as a digital version (eTRF). |
IDP Canada's results page describes a Test Report Form posted 2-5 days after a computer test. Its test booking page says you will also be able to download your Test Report Form online with IELTS on Computer, and that with computer delivery you have the option of accessing and downloading a digital TRF. IDP Australia describes an eTRF. We found no download steps on IDP Canada's pages. If you searched for "download IELTS TRF online IDP Canada", our advice is to ask the centre on your booking whether an eTRF is offered, and to use the steps in your own booking email.
Our Australia results page lists IDP Australia's eTRF steps, which are a useful guide to how the portal works if your centre offers one.
The TRF number: what it is and where to find it
One reference, printed on the form and visible in your account.
The same question is typed many ways: TRF number, TRF number ielts, TRF number of IELTS, TRF number in IELTS. They all mean the reference number of your Test Report Form.
| Question | What the page says |
|---|---|
| Where is it? | Your TRF number is available on both the Test Report Form you receive and through the unofficial online result at the bottom of the page. |
| Where does the British Council show it? | If the institution you are applying to accepts or requires only the TRF Number, you can get it through your Test Taker Portal. |
| Who uses it? | IRCC has access to the IELTS Results Service in order to verify test taker results via the TRF number. |
| Do I still need a paper copy for IRCC? | As of January 01, 2023 Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) does not require a hard copy of the TRF for your application. |
The first two rows come from different organisers, so the "unofficial online result" line belongs to the Conestoga centre and the Test Taker Portal line to the British Council. Our reading of the last two rows: the number identifies your result, so for an immigration application copy it exactly as printed and check it character by character before you submit.
This is not immigration advice. IRCC's own pages decide what a form asks for. Our page on English tests accepted by IRCC lists the tests it takes, and IELTS to CLB converts the band scores.
Extra copies, lost forms and how long a result is valid
Plan the copies at booking time.
| Topic | What the page says |
|---|---|
| Your own copy (IDP Canada) | For each IELTS test taken, you will automatically receive one Test Report Form (TRF). |
| Copies sent for you (IDP Canada) | You also have the option at the time of registration to request copies of your TRF be sent to up to 5 additional institutions or organizations (postage may be extra). |
| Later requests (IDP Canada) | Any requests for any number of TRFs at a later date require an additional fee. |
| Validity (IDP Canada) | Your IELTS results are valid for 2 years from your test date. |
| Lost or damaged form (British Council) | You will receive just one copy of your Test Report Form. Replacement copies are not issued in the event of loss or damage. However, we can send up to five free copies to a recognising organisation within the two year test validity period. |
| One centre's fee (Conestoga) | For 6 or more copies of your TRF, a $30.00 per TRF fee will be charged. |
The fee in the last row is one centre's price and not a national rate. Ask your own centre for its additional-copy fee before you order.
IELTS result calculator: your overall band
Add four scores, divide by four, round as the owners say.
An IELTS result calculator is a small piece of arithmetic. The IELTS owners publish the rule, and the worked examples below are theirs.
"The overall band score is the average of the four section band scores rounded to the nearest half band."
"If the average of the four sections ends in .25, the overall band score is rounded up to the next half band, and if it ends in .75, the overall band score is rounded up to the next whole band."
| Test taker | Listening | Reading | Writing | Speaking | Average | Overall band |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | 6.5 | 6.5 | 5.0 | 7.0 | 6.25 | 6.5 |
| B | 4.0 | 3.5 | 4.0 | 4.0 | 3.875 | 4.0 |
| C | 6.5 | 6.5 | 5.5 | 6.0 | 6.125 | 6.0 |
The British Council's Canadian page answers the question people type most: "If your overall score is an average of 6.25, your score will be rounded up to 6.5." Its all-countries page gives a second case: if your four section scores are 6.0, 6.0, 6.0 and 6.5, your average is 6.125, which is rounded down to an overall band score of 6.
Our quick lookup
Add your four section scores. Find the total in the first column. The overall band is in the last column. It applies the rule quoted above to every total from 22.0 to 34.0.
| Total of the four section scores | Average | Overall band |
|---|---|---|
| 22.0 | 5.5 | 5.5 |
| 22.5 | 5.625 | 5.5 |
| 23.0 | 5.75 | 6.0 |
| 23.5 | 5.875 | 6.0 |
| 24.0 | 6.0 | 6.0 |
| 24.5 | 6.125 | 6.0 |
| 25.0 | 6.25 | 6.5 |
| 25.5 | 6.375 | 6.5 |
| 26.0 | 6.5 | 6.5 |
| 26.5 | 6.625 | 6.5 |
| 27.0 | 6.75 | 7.0 |
| 27.5 | 6.875 | 7.0 |
| 28.0 | 7.0 | 7.0 |
| 28.5 | 7.125 | 7.0 |
| 29.0 | 7.25 | 7.5 |
| 29.5 | 7.375 | 7.5 |
| 30.0 | 7.5 | 7.5 |
| 30.5 | 7.625 | 7.5 |
| 31.0 | 7.75 | 8.0 |
| 31.5 | 7.875 | 8.0 |
| 32.0 | 8.0 | 8.0 |
| 32.5 | 8.125 | 8.0 |
| 33.0 | 8.25 | 8.5 |
| 33.5 | 8.375 | 8.5 |
| 34.0 | 8.5 | 8.5 |
This table is our own arithmetic, not a score report. Your Test Report Form is the only result an institution will accept.
What the calculator cannot do
It starts from section scores. Those come from two different places. The British Council says: "Both sections both have 40 questions, with one mark awarded for each correct answer. Marks are not lost for incorrect answers." Reading and Listening are marked that way, and Writing and Speaking are marked by examiners against band descriptors.
There is also no pass mark to calculate toward. IDP says: "There is no pass or fail in IELTS Academic or General Training test." Each institution or organisation sets its own level. To see what a band means for Canadian immigration, use IELTS to CLB.
IELTS re-evaluation: asking for a re-mark in Canada
Six weeks to apply. The fee and the wait are quoted differently on different pages.
IELTS calls a re-evaluation an Enquiry on Results, or EOR. IDP Canada and the British Council agree on the main rules, but the pages we read quote different fees, waiting times and refund wording. We show each statement so you can see the gap.
| Question | What the pages say |
|---|---|
| Deadline | You can request a remark within 6 weeks of the IELTS test date on your Test Report Form. |
| What can be re-marked | You can request a remark for the whole IELTS test or for one or more parts (Reading, Writing, Listening or Speaking). |
| Fee, IDP Canada results page | An Enquiry on Results (EOR) costs $176. |
| Fee, IDP Canada FAQ | The fee for Enquiry on Results is $165. |
| Fee, IDP Canada EOR page | The fee ranges between $165 - $290 depending on which test centre you attended. |
| Fee, IDP Canada Burnaby venue page | we will send you an online invoice that you can pay via debit or credit in the amount of $200. |
| Fee, British Council Canada | Please contact your test centre for information about applicable fees. |
| Time, IDP Canada remark page | Your reviewed EOR results are available within 2 hours to 21 days of applying for a remark. |
| Time, IDP Canada FAQ | The review may take between 6 to 8 weeks. |
| Refund | If your band scores change, the fee you paid will be refunded. |
| Refund, British Council all-countries page | You will pay a fee to have one or more sections re-marked, but this will be refunded if your score increases in any section of the test. |
| Can the score go down? | Your score does not go down from a remark. So, it will either remain unchanged or increase. |
| Who re-marks | Writing and Speaking Enquiry on Results (EOR) re-marking is completed by experienced senior IELTS examiners. |
| How to apply | The procedure for requesting an Enquiry on Results (EOR) varies by test centre. |
Sources disagree on three points, and we have not picked a winner. The fee is quoted as $176, $165, $200 and a range from $165 to $290. The time is quoted as 2 hours to 21 days and as 6 to 8 weeks. And the refund is described as "if your band scores change", "if your scores go up" and, on the British Council's site, "if your score increases in any section". IDP Canada says a remark cannot lower your score, so the practical difference between its two wordings is small. The British Council's pages we read do not say.
Our reading: the pages that give a range or send you to the centre are the safer ones, because the fee does depend on the centre. Ask your own centre for the current fee and the expected time in writing before you apply, and apply well inside the six weeks.
The British Council route, from its Canadian page: "Log in to your Test Taker Portal, go to the Results page and select the option to apply for an Enquiry on Results." The all-countries British Council page adds that the outcome "may be available on the same day as your application or up to 21 days afterwards."
IELTS technical issue: results that were adjusted
Some results from August 2023 to September 2025 were corrected.
If you searched for "IELTS technical issue results adjusted", you are probably asking about a correction IELTS made to some results issued between August 2023 and September 2025. The IELTS owners published a statement with figures on 11 June 2026.
"We apologise to those affected, and we take responsibility for the error that resulted in some people receiving incorrect results."
| What the statement reports | Figure |
|---|---|
| Period affected | 24 August 2023 and 4 September 2025 |
| IELTS test instances processed in that period | 7,786,614 |
| Test instances with a changed result at component or qualification level | 63,216, affecting 62,794 individual learners |
| Test instances with a change at qualification level | 21,717 |
| Upward changes | 20,602 (20,600 consisting of a 0.5 overall band adjustment and 2 consisting of a 1.0 band adjustment) |
| Downward changes | 1,115 (all consisting of a 0.5 overall band adjustment) |
| Refunds requested and received | 26,246 |
| Resits requested and received | 1,145 |
| Complaints received, and complaints upheld | 270 and 24 |
Two points stand out when you read the figures. Most of the changed results moved up, not down: 20,602 upward against 1,115 downward changes at qualification level. And IELTS says it offered redress to everyone affected.
IELTS also runs a separate help site for people affected, and links an update dated November 2025 from its own results page.
"Here you can access further information regarding the IELTS score issue."
"An update on IELTS score corrections November 2025"
What to do with this: the statement describes the whole group, not your result. If you tested in that window and your result matters for an application, look at your email and your online account for a revised result, read the IELTS Result Support site, and ask your test centre. Our reading: if your result was changed, use the revised Test Report Form and not the earlier one.
If your IELTS result is late or on hold
Quality checks are the usual reason.
The British Council explains delays more fully than the other pages.
"Occasionally, IELTS results are delayed due to quality control checks. These are random checks to ensure scores are fair and accurate."
"Contact your Test Centre if your results are not available during the normal timeframe for the test you took."
"if it is considered that malpractice may have occurred, you will be advised that your results have been withheld."
The instruction in each case is to ask the test centre where you sat the test. IDP gives the same advice for a Test Report Form that has not arrived.
"If you have been waiting on your IELTS Test Report Form (TFR) with your official result, but have not received it, we recommend contacting your test centre."
Common questions
There is no set time of day. The British Council says IELTS results do not come out at a specific time of day, and are typically available within 1 to 2 days after the exam date for IELTS on Computer. For paper tests, IDP says results are online at 12:00 am GMT on the 13th day.
IDP Canada says typically within 48 hours, "2 days" on its FAQ page and as little as 3 business days on its home page. The British Council says 1 to 2 days. IDP's page for all countries says 1 to 5 days.
IDP Canada's results page describes a Test Report Form posted 2-5 days after a computer test, and its booking page says you can also download a digital TRF with IELTS on Computer. The British Council describes an eTRF download from its Test Taker Portal. Ask your IDP centre which applies to your booking.
It is the reference number of your Test Report Form. One Canadian IELTS centre says your TRF number is available on both the Test Report Form you receive and through the unofficial online result, and the British Council says you can get it through your Test Taker Portal.
The British Council says you will get an email with a link to the Test Taker Portal when your result is ready. It says it cannot disclose your result by email or over the phone.
Yes. The British Council says: "If your overall score is an average of 6.25, your score will be rounded up to 6.5."
Apply for an Enquiry on Results within 6 weeks of your test date, through your test centre or, for the British Council, your Test Taker Portal. Fees and waiting times are quoted differently on different pages, so confirm them with your own centre.
IELTS says some results issued between 24 August 2023 and 4 September 2025 were incorrect and were corrected. It says it offered refunds or resits to everyone affected.
