IELTS examination results in Australia: how long they take, the TRF and the eTRF

Last verified 3 Oct 2026 against ielts.org, ielts.com.au, ielts.com.au
SHORT ANSWER

IDP Australia says results for IELTS on computer are typically available within one day. You can preview a provisional result online first, then download your official eTRF from your IELTS profile under My Tests. Only the TRF or eTRF counts as official confirmation of your result.

This page covers the whole results trail for an IELTS test taken in Australia: how long you wait, how to look at your result, what the Test Report Form is, how to send it on, how long it stays valid, and what your options are if the score is not what you needed. Every rule is quoted from IDP Australia or the IELTS owners, with the page it came from.

How long IELTS results take in Australia

One day for most computer tests, a little longer for some formats.

Most people searching for IELTS result time want one number. IDP Australia gives one for IELTS on computer.

The word that matters is typically. A later section covers what IDP says about a result that takes longer. The table puts each timing next to the page that states it.

"Choose how you complete your Writing test with IELTS Writing on Paper!"
IDP Australia's banner says: ielts.com.au

That banner tells you the handwritten Writing option is on offer. IDP Australia's results page gives one timing, for computer tests. For the handwritten option the figures differ: ielts.org says within five days of your test date, and the British Council's global results page says 13 days after your test date. Your booking confirmation is where your test centre will say how it applies to you.

Our reading: a result on the first day is a good outcome, not a promise. If you have a deadline, such as a visa application or a university offer date, treat five days as the working limit for a standard computer test, 13 days if you chose Writing on Paper and the British Council figure applies to you, and treat anything later as a reason to contact your test centre.

How to check your IELTS result online

Preview first, then download the official form.

There are two things you can look at, and they are not the same. The first is a provisional result that you can preview online. The second is your official result, which is the TRF. IDP Australia says the difference plainly.

SOURCE, VERBATIM
"However, this should not be used as an official confirmation of your performance"

"only the TRF or eTRF are considered as official confirmation of results."

Step by step for IELTS on computer

  1. Wait for your test centre to tell you the result is ready. IDP Australia says you can view or check your provisional IELTS results online once they are available.
  2. To preview your results online, you need your passport or ID number, the same number you used when you registered for the test. Your results will be available online for 28 days.
  3. For the official result, wait for the email. IDP Australia says you will receive an email when your eTRF is ready.
  4. Log in to your IELTS profile and go to "My Tests".
  5. Open your official results, then download your eTRF or click the "Notify Institution" button to send your results to your chosen organisations.

Those steps are the ones IDP Australia lists for tests taken at its Australian test centres on computer. IDP also adds that the website works best with Google Chrome on a laptop or a computer.

SOURCE, VERBATIM
"Can you send the results to my email ID? No. We are unable to share results via email or phone."
IDP Australia says: ielts.com.au
SOURCE, VERBATIM
"In some instances, your IELTS Test Centre will offer you to receive your provisional IELTS results direct to your mobile phone by text message."
IDP Australia says about SMS: ielts.com.au

So your result will not arrive by email or phone call. The email you get only tells you it is ready. Whether a text message is offered depends on your test centre, and IDP says to check with the centre before your results are released.

What the TRF and the eTRF are

The Test Report Form is your official result. The eTRF is the digital copy.

TRF is short for Test Report Form. Universities, employers and immigration forms often ask for it by that name.

QuestionWhat IDP Australia says
What is the TRF?Your official IELTS score is stated on your Test Report Form or TRF.
What does it show? The TRF serves as your official confirmation of your overall test score as well as your scores for the Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking sections of the test.
What is the eTRF?An IELTS eTRF is a digital version of the IELTS Test Report Form. It's the same IELTS TRF you know, delivered digitally.
Where do I find it?The eTRF will be available in your booking profile as a downloadable PDF file.
Can I print it myself? No, you cannot print your own eTRF.
Will a paper copy be posted?most IELTS computer test centres no longer automatically mail out Test Report Forms. If you prefer a hard copy, kindly request it directly from the test centre.

Our reading of the "cannot print" rule: the institution should receive your eTRF from the portal, not from a copy you print or forward. The next section explains how that works.

Sending your result to a university, employer or department

Postal copy or portal, whichever the receiver asks for.

Ask the receiver first. IDP Australia puts the choice in their hands.

DeliveryWhat IDP Australia says
Who decidesYour chosen institutions will specify how they prefer to receive your official IELTS results: either through postal mail (paper TRF), or electronically (eTRF).
Paper TRF by postWe can easily send your official IELTS results with up to five nominated institutions, via postal mail. Simply let us know when you book your IELTS test.
eTRF through the portalResults can be shared with your nominated institutions using the online portal. Your chosen institutions will be notified electronically and will be able to verify your official results.
LimitNote that this option is only eligible for eTRF results for IELTS on computer tests.

Our reading: before you press "Notify Institution", ask the organisation for the exact name or account it expects, and copy it from their own instructions. IDP Australia's note on this is short: "Please contact your chosen institutions to confirm how they prefer to receive your official IELTS results."

For visas, the Department of Home Affairs sets the rules, not IDP. Our page on English tests accepted for Australian visas lists which tests and scores each visa takes. This page is not immigration advice; the Department's own pages decide.

How long an IELTS result stays valid

Two years is the usual figure.

SOURCE, VERBATIM
"IELTS scores (TRF or eTRF) are typically valid for two years from the date of the test."
IDP Australia says: ielts.com.au
SOURCE, VERBATIM
"While it is up to each organisation to set a validity period that works for their purposes, the IELTS partners recommend a 2-year validity period for IELTS test results."
IDP Australia also says: ielts.com.au

Two things follow. The two years run from the test date, not from the day you downloaded the form. And each organisation can set its own rule, so a university or a professional body may accept a shorter or longer period. IDP's own advice is to check with the specific institution.

SOURCE, VERBATIM
"It's essential to check with specific institutions or organisations to confirm their score validity requirements, as some may have different policies."
IDP Australia says: ielts.com.au

If the result is not what you needed

A remark, a one-skill retake or a full re-sit.

There is no pass mark to miss. IELTS gives band scores and each institution sets its own minimum. If a score falls short of yours, IDP Australia describes three routes.

OptionWhat IDP Australia says
Remark (Enquiry on Results)An Enquiry on Results (EOR) costs $240. You may request a test remark by applying for an Enquiry on Results with your Test Centre, within six weeks of sitting your test.
If the score goes upShould your band score increase, the cost will be refunded in full and a new Test Report Form will be issued.
How long a remark takesthe results of your EOR may be completed within 2 hours to 21 days.
Who re-marksSenior examiners/markers re-mark the tests.
One Skill RetakeIELTS One Skill Retake is currently only available if you have taken your IELTS on computer test at an eligible test centre, and have received your IELTS results. You must take the IELTS One Skill Retake within 60 days of your original test date.
Order matters, IDP's results pageDo this before you register for One Skill Retake as you cannot request a remark after you've taken IELTS One Skill Retake.
Order matters, IDP's remark pageYes. You can apply for an Enquiry on Results (EOR/remark) on your original test even after you have booked an IELTS One Skill Retake.
Full re-sitThere are no restrictions on how many times you can re-take the IELTS test. You must do all four parts if you need to repeat (re-sit) the test.

IDP's results page says to ask for a remark before you register for One Skill Retake, because you cannot request one after you have taken it. IDP's remark page says you can still apply after you have booked a retake. Our reading: the safe order is to request the remark first. IDP Australia says your score does not go down from a remark, so the band either stays the same or goes up. IDP's pages word the refund three ways: if your band score increases, if your scores go up, and if your band score changes. In every wording you pay $240 and get it back only if the result changes. Our reading: a remark makes most sense when one section is far below what you expected and the other three matched your practice.

Result late, missing or wrong

What to do and who to ask.

Three situations come up again and again. IDP's answers are below, and the next lines say who to contact.

SituationWhat IDP says
The result is lateSometimes we might need a little longer to check. This is to ensure that your score is correct.
Result withheldif it is considered that malpractice may have occurred, you will be advised that your results have been withheld.
The TRF has an errorIf there is an error on your Test Report Form, please contact your IELTS test centre. The test centre will re-issue a new Test Report Form.

The withheld-result line comes from IDP's global results page. It describes rare cases, and the same page adds a further consequence.

SOURCE, VERBATIM
"In exceptional circumstances, it may be required that you need to re-sit one or more IELTS test parts."
IDP says: ielts.idp.com

If you are simply waiting for a result, the same page says who to ask.

SOURCE, VERBATIM
"If you have been waiting on your IELTS Test Report Form (TFR) with your official result, but have not received it, we recommend contacting your test centre."
