Duolingo English Test fee, price and cost in Canada
A Duolingo guide updated in February 2026 says the Duolingo English Test costs $70USD. An older Duolingo post, from December 2024, said $65 USD, so we show both. Duolingo quotes US dollars only. All payments are nonrefundable. The one exception is a Test Issue, such as a failure in the test, and even then Duolingo chooses whether to refund, credit or try to fix it.
This page collects what Duolingo itself says about the test fee, its refunds and its coupons. Where two Duolingo pages disagree, we show both and their dates. The price is in US dollars, and you should check it on screen before you pay.
What the Duolingo English Test costs
Duolingo's own pages give two prices, a year apart.
The Duolingo English Test is priced in US dollars. Two Duolingo pages state a price, and they do not agree. We show both, with their dates, so you can see which is newer.
| Duolingo page | Date | Price it states |
|---|---|---|
| How to prepare for the Duolingo English Test (guide) | Updated in February 2026 | $70USD |
| Canada ends the Student Direct Stream (blog post) | December 11, 2024 | $65 USD |
The newer page says $70USD, so that is the price we would expect today. We could not confirm it at checkout, because Duolingo's purchase page asks you to create an account before it shows anything. Check the price on screen before you pay.
Duolingo also compares itself with other tests. Its December 2024 post says other tests range from $300 to $400 USD, and its home page says the DET costs a fraction of other tests. Those are Duolingo's claims about its competitors, not a price list.
"Test online, get results in 2 days Test online, no appointment needed Get results in 2 days A fraction of the cost of other tests"
The price in Canadian dollars
What the sources do not say.
Duolingo's pages that we could read quote US dollars only. They give no Canadian dollar price, and they say nothing about tax in Canada. So we cannot tell you what appears on a Canadian card statement. The amount depends on the exchange rate on the day and anything your bank adds.
What Duolingo does say about extra costs is good news for applicants who apply to several schools: there are no travel costs, and no hidden fees for sending scores to multiple schools.
"Affordability: At just $65 USD, the DET is much more cost-effective than other tests, which range from $300 to $400 USD. Plus, there are no travel costs to go to a test center or hidden fees for sending scores to multiple schools."
What you get for the fee
Score sharing, results time and a free practice test.
- You can send certified scores to unlimited institutions for free.
- Certified results are typically available within two days. Duolingo says results come in just 48 hours, or 12 if you pay for fast-track invigilation. We did not find a price for the fast-track option.
- A free practice test that can be taken multiple times.
- A certificate that is valid for two years from the date you take the test.
The fast-track option matters if you are close to a deadline. Since we have no price for it, look for it on Duolingo's purchase screen.
Refunds, coupons and fee waivers
From Duolingo's terms, which are the rules you accept when you pay.
Duolingo's terms say all payments are nonrefundable. The exception is a Test Issue: not being able to complete the test because of a failure in the test, or not getting your results within a commercially reasonable time. For a Test Issue, Duolingo will, at its option, give a refund or credit, or use reasonable efforts to resolve it.
"All payments are nonrefundable. There are no refunds or credits for expired, unused, or partially used test purchases or results, or for any premium processing service."
"However, if you are unable to complete the DET due to a failure in the test, or if you do not receive your DET results within a commercially reasonable period of time after the test is completed (“Test Issue”), Duolingo will, at its option, provide you with a refund or credit, or use reasonable efforts to resolve the Test Issue."
To claim, you must report the problem in writing to Duolingo within 24 hours after it occurs, respond to Duolingo's requests for information, not be responsible for the problem and have met all requirements when taking the test. A refund for a Test Issue will not exceed what you paid for that test. Do it the same day. Coupon codes also have limits.
"DET Coupon Codes have no dollar value and cannot be redeemed for a refund on past purchases."
We do not list coupon codes, and we cannot vouch for sites that do. Some coupon codes are sponsored by an institution and, if you use one, Duolingo may share your test data with that institution. That is in the same terms.
Fee waivers
Duolingo runs an Access Program for low-income students. Its page is written for institutions: it invites them to request fee waivers for applicants or students in need. It says eligible students can take the test at no cost, so ask the school you are applying to whether it takes part.
"The Duolingo English Test Access Program has provided thousands of fee waivers to support low-income students. Request fee waivers for your applicants or students in need."
Rules that can cost you the fee
Breaking a test rule can end in an invalid result and no refund.
The terms also say what happens if you break the test rules. Duolingo may invalidate your results, even if they have already been certified. If it does, you do not get a refund, and you have 72 hours to appeal.
"If Duolingo determines, in its sole discretion, that a user has violated any Test Rules, Duolingo may invalidate the user's test results, even if those results have been previously certified"
"There are no refunds if Duolingo invalidates your test or suspends your account because Duolingo determined that you violated the Test Rules, Duolingo Terms, or DET Terms."
Two basics to get right: register with your real name, and have the form of identification Duolingo asks for. The readiness guide also says to have one uninterrupted hour, to keep your face and ears visible and not to wear headphones.
How the fee compares
Each owner prices in its own currency. We do not convert.
The cheapest test is only cheap if the people reading your result accept it. This table puts the fee beside whether the test is on IRCC's Express Entry list.
| Test | Fee as its owner states it | On IRCC's Express Entry list? |
|---|---|---|
| Duolingo English Test | $70USD in a Duolingo guide updated in February 2026 ($65 USD in an earlier post) | No |
| TOEFL iBT, Canada | US$249 | No |
| TOEFL Essentials | US$199 for all countries | No, designated but not currently accepted |
| CELPIP-General | Two prices on Paragon's own pages: CAD 290.00 plus tax in its fee notice for sittings on or after 1 October 2024 ($290 + Taxes on its CELPIP-General page), and $299 + Taxes (where applicable) on its overview page and $299 CAD on its booking pages | Yes |
| PTE Core | CA$360.00 | Yes |
| IELTS General Training, Canada | CAD $335 to $361 before tax | Yes |
Paragon's own pages show two prices for CELPIP-General, so check its booking page before you pay.
The TOEFL iBT price excludes taxes, as ETS says on its fee page. See our TOEFL fee page for Canada, the CELPIP fee page and the Duolingo for Canada page to see what each test can be used for.

On the owners' own prices, yes: $70USD against US$249 for the TOEFL iBT in Canada. But neither is on IRCC's Express Entry list, so the cheaper test does not help with that purpose.
