TOEFL exam fee in Canada: price, extras and refunds

Last verified 3 Oct 2026 against celpip.ca, celpip.ca, celpip.ca
SHORT ANSWER

ETS lists the TOEFL iBT fee for Canada as US$249, in US dollars and before tax. Extras cost more, such as US$49 for express registration and US$69 to reschedule, and a cancellation in time gets 50% of the fee back.

This page puts ETS's own fee figures for Canada in one place: the test fee, the extras, what the fee already covers, and the deadlines that decide whether you get money back. Where ETS gives two different figures, we show both. It is a price guide, not immigration advice, and ETS's own pages decide.

NOT ADVICERequirements change. Confirm on the official IRCC page before you book a test or submit your application.

The TOEFL iBT fee for Canada

One price, in US dollars, before tax.

ETS runs the TOEFL. It publishes the TOEFL iBT registration fee as a list of countries: you pick your testing location and the page shows the fee for it. For Canada the list gives US$249. ETS prints the column as Test Fee (USD), so this is a US dollar price.

CurrencyUS dollars. The column is headed Test Fee (USD).
TaxNot in the price. ETS's fee page says the prices exclude VAT or other applicable taxes, except for EU countries. ETS's Information Bulletin lists Canada among the countries where fees are exclusive of sales and similar taxes, which are added to the order when it is placed.

ETS does not show a Canadian dollar amount on this page. What your card is charged in Canadian dollars depends on the exchange rate on the day and on any tax added to the price. We have no ETS statement of that final amount, so we do not guess one.

Extra ETS fees

Late registration, rescheduling, score reviews and more.

These are ETS's own extra charges, all in US dollars. You only pay the ones you use.

Two prices for extra score reports

ETS gives two different figures for an additional score report. Its fee page says US$29 each. Its scores page says US$25 per institution or agency. We cannot tell which page is newer, so we show both. Check the amount at checkout before you order.

What your fee already covers

Score reports, payment and how long the result lasts.

  • Up to four free score reports sent to institutions, agencies or other recipients you add in your ETS account until 10 p.m. on test day.
  • Your scores appear in your ETS account 3 days after your test date.
  • Your scores are valid for 2 years. PDF score reports are ready 1 day after you get your electronic scores.

When you register through your ETS account, ETS says you can pay by credit or debit card, e-check, PayPal or Alipay.

Deadlines, changes and refunds

From the ETS Information Bulletin for the 2026 to 2027 year.

ETS's Information Bulletin sets the rules that decide whether you pay extra or get money back. The edition we read says its policies are in effect from July 2026 through June 2027.

RuleWhat the Bulletin says
Regular online registrationCloses 7 full days before the test date. After that you pay the express fee.
Express online registrationCloses 2 days before the test date.
Reschedule or cancelDo it at least 4 full days before your test date. If ETS does not get your request 4 days ahead, your test fee is not refunded.
Refund if you cancel in timeETS refunds 50% of the original test fee if you cancel by the 4-day deadline.
RetakesNo limit on how many times you take the test, but not more than once in a 3-day period.
Arriving at a test centreBe there at least 30 minutes before your assigned start time.

You reschedule or cancel through your ETS account. The Bulletin says test appointments cannot be rescheduled or cancelled by regular mail or email, or at the test centre. Plan the date properly: the cheapest booking is the one you never need to change.

How the fee compares with other tests

Each owner prices in its own currency. We do not convert.

If you are pricing the TOEFL in Canada, you may be choosing between tests. Here is each owner's own figure beside the TOEFL. The last column says whether the test is on IRCC's list for Express Entry, because that decides whether a cheaper test is even an option for immigration.

TestFee as its owner states itOn the IRCC Express Entry list we read?
TOEFL iBT, CanadaUS$249 (ETS)No
TOEFL EssentialsUS$199 for all countries (ETS)No
Duolingo English Test$70USD in a Duolingo guide updated in February 2026 ($65 USD in a December 2024 post)No
CELPIP-GeneralTwo prices on Paragon's own pages: CAD 290.00 plus tax in its fee notice dated 28 June 2024 for sittings on or after 1 October 2024 ($290 + Taxes on its CELPIP-General page), and $299 + Taxes (where applicable) on its overview page and $299 CAD on its booking pagesYes
PTE CoreCA$360.00 (Pearson)Yes
IELTS General TrainingCAD $335 to $361 before tax, in Canada (IDP)Yes

Two rows need a note. Duolingo's February 2026 guide and its December 2024 post disagree, and we could not see the price at checkout, because Duolingo's purchase page asks you to create an account before it shows anything. Paragon's own pages show two prices for CELPIP-General, so check its booking page before you pay.

Our reading: the TOEFL fee buys you a test that universities know well. It does not buy you a test on the IRCC list. If your goal is permanent residence, read our TOEFL for Canadian immigration page before you pay anything, and see the CELPIP fee page for the test Paragon sells.

Discounts and vouchers

What ETS publishes, and what it does not.

The only discount on ETS's fee page is a Fee Reduction Service for high school seniors in the United States with financial need. Its voucher covers 50% of the regular test fee. It is not for test takers in Canada.
