IELTS in Canada: IDP or British Council

Last verified 3 Oct 2026 against ielts.idp.com, takeielts.britishcouncil.org, ielts.ca
SHORT ANSWER

Both companies say the IELTS test is identical, with the same questions and marking, and the British Council adds that results are accepted regardless of which provider ran the test, so neither is easier. In Canada they differ in centres, how fast results arrive, the free preparation they include, venue prices and promotions, and cancellation terms. Pick the one with the date, place and price that suit you.

IDP and the British Council both run IELTS in Canada. They are two of the three owners of the test, so the question people ask is whether it matters which one you book with. We read each company's own pages to see what they say is the same and what is different.

NOT ADVICERequirements change. Confirm on the official IRCC page before you book a test or submit your application.

What is the same

Both companies say the test is identical.

SOURCE, VERBATIM
"Quick Answer: Neither test provider is "easier" or scored more leniently. Both the British Council and IDP are joint owners of the International English Language Testing System alongside Cambridge University Press & Assessment. The actual test questions, format, scoring standards, and international validity are 100% identical. Your choice comes down to test location, exam dates, test-day facilities (like headphones), and preparation materials."
British Council says: takeielts.britishcouncil.org
SOURCE, VERBATIM
"Taking your IELTS test at IDP is the same as taking one at British Council. In addition, the marking scheme and standards are exactly the same."
IDP IELTS Canada says: ielts.idp.com

Each company says the same about the test. The questions, format, marking and scale are the same, because IELTS is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP and Cambridge University Press & Assessment. IDP and the British Council run bookings and test centres, and the test they run is one test. Both companies say the IELTS test is accepted by IRCC, the Canadian immigration department: IDP says its IELTS is approved by IRCC for permanent residency and work visas, and the British Council says its IELTS is recognised by all four Canadian immigration authorities, including IRCC. IRCC's own language-test page lists IELTS (General Training for Express Entry) and does not name IDP or the British Council.

The British Council also says all examiners complete the same training course and follow the same marking criteria, and that the result is accepted by thousands of schools and businesses regardless of which provider administered the test. Our reading: so you do not need to worry that a score from one company counts for less. The question is which company's centre, date and price suit you.

What differs in Canada

Centres, results, free preparation, fees and promotions.

SOURCE, VERBATIM
"While the test is the same, sometimes the fees aren’t. IDP and British Council have different prices that you should check."
IDP IELTS Canada says: ielts.idp.com

The differences are about how you book, not what you sit. This table sets each company's own claims side by side. Where a cell says we did not find a detail, it was not on the pages we read.

One Skill RetakeAvailable for IELTS on Computer, within 60 days of the original testOffered: retake just one skill

Two cautions on this table. First, centre counts are each company's own claim, so check both booking pages for your city. Second, IRCC says it does not accept IELTS One Skill Retake for Express Entry. If you are applying for Canadian immigration, ask your organisation before you use it. Also check the version: IRCC needs IELTS General Training for Express Entry, and our Academic vs General Training page covers that.

Cancelling or moving your test

The two rule sets look alike, and IDP's own pages disagree.

Plans change, so the cancellation rules can matter more than a small venue promotion. Here is what each company says:

ItemIDP IELTS CanadaBritish Council (ielts.ca)
15 or more days before the testA refund of the test fee less a $75 administrative charge (IDP's Burnaby venue page; IDP's other pages say only 'admin charge'). One free transfer.75% refund of the total test fee (25% admin fee). Free transfer.
Within 14 days of the test5-14 days before: transfer allowed with a $75 administrative fee. Within 14 days: the test fee is non-refundable. Within 4 days: no transfer. No refund. A transfer 5-14 days before costs a 25% admin fee. Under 5 days, no transfer.

Now the catch. IDP Canada's cost page says something different from its own reschedule page. The cost page says that if you reschedule more than five weeks (5) before the test date you get a refund minus an administration charge, and that within five (5) weeks you are charged the full fee unless you have a serious medical reason. The reschedule page uses 15 days and 14 days instead. We cannot tell which page is current, so we show both. Ask your test centre in writing which rule applies to your booking, and keep the reply.

Our reading: whichever company you choose, book a date you are confident you can keep. Moving or cancelling inside two weeks is costly at both, and IDP's cost page says it could be costly inside five weeks.

How to choose

Date, place, price and preparation, in that order.

OUR ORIGINAL EXAMPLE, NOT FROM A TEST OWNER
  1. Search both companies' booking pages for your city and the date you need, as early as you can. The company with the date and place that suit you is usually the right one.
  2. Check the final price on each booking page at checkout, including any venue promotion. Do not rely on a coupon site.
  3. Compare the free courses in the table above, and ask the centre you pick whether the free course comes with your booking. Use whichever free course comes with your booking.
  4. Ask the venue about headphones for Listening and about Writing on Paper if you prefer handwriting.
  5. Read the cancellation terms for the venue you pick, and keep a written copy.
  6. Book the right version: IELTS General Training for Express Entry, Academic for most university study.

This page compares what the two companies publish. It is not immigration advice, and IRCC decides which test and scores count for your programme.

Common questions

Neither. The British Council says neither provider is easier or scored more leniently, and that the test questions, format, scoring standards and validity are identical. IDP says taking IELTS at IDP is the same as taking it at British Council, with the same marking scheme and standards.

No. Both say the test and marking are the same. The difference is where and when you can sit it, the price at your venue, and the preparation each company includes with its booking.

Both companies say so. IDP says its IELTS is approved by IRCC for permanent residency and work visas, and the British Council says its IELTS is recognised by all four Canadian immigration authorities, including IRCC. IRCC's own page lists the IELTS General Training option for Express Entry and does not name a provider, so check IRCC's page for your programme.

Each makes its own claim. IDP says it has 180+ test centres in 50+ cities across Canada. The British Council gives two figures on ielts.ca: 150+ test centres on its home page and over 80 on its exam-dates page. Each is its own claim, so check both booking pages for your city.

IDP gives two figures on one page: typically 48 hours and typically 1-2 days. The British Council says typically 1-2 days, and one banner on its home page says typically 2 days. Neither promises a date, so allow extra time before a deadline.

IDP says the cost ranges between CAD $335 and $361 before tax. The British Council's booking page we read does not list a full fee for each venue, so compare the final price at checkout. It shows a banner for up to $35 off at participating venues. Compare the final price on each booking page for your venue and date.

Both companies give a refund if you cancel 15 or more days before the test, less admin charges: the British Council says 75% back. Within 14 days there is no standard refund at either, but both describe a special-consideration route for exceptional circumstances such as serious illness, which you apply for through your test centre with evidence. IDP's cost page uses a five-week rule instead, so ask your centre which applies.
