TOEFL exam fee for Australia: what ETS charges
ETS lists the TOEFL iBT fee for Australia as US$293, in US dollars and before tax. Extras cost more, such as US$49 for express registration and US$69 to reschedule, and a cancellation in time gets 50% of the fee back.
This page puts ETS's own fee figures for Australia in one place: the test fee, the extras, what the fee already covers, and the deadlines that decide whether you get money back. It also flags the one booking choice that matters for a visa. It is a price guide, not immigration advice, and ETS and Home Affairs decide.
The TOEFL iBT fee for Australia
One price, in US dollars, before tax.
ETS runs the TOEFL and publishes the TOEFL iBT registration fee as a list of countries. For Australia the list gives US$293. The column is headed Test Fee (USD), so it is a US dollar price.
| What you want to know | What ETS says |
|---|---|
| Registration fee, Australia | US$293 |
| Currency | US dollars. The column is headed Test Fee (USD). |
| Tax | Not in the price. ETS says the prices exclude VAT or other applicable taxes, except for EU countries. |
| How to check it yourself | Select your testing location on ETS's fee page to view the registration fee. |
"Note: The prices in the table do NOT include VAT or other applicable taxes"
ETS's Bulletin lists Australia among the places where test fees exclude sales, use, value-added or similar taxes, and says these are added to the order when it is placed. ETS shows no Australian dollar amount on this page, and your bank's exchange rate on the day also changes what you pay, so we do not guess a final amount.
Pay for the version Australia accepts
A cheaper booking is no use if the result is refused.
For an Australian visa, the way you book matters as much as the price. Home Affairs wants the TOEFL iBT taken at a secure test centre, and wants you to pick a particular option when you register.
"To ensure your TOEFL iBT result is valid for Australian visa purposes, you must select ‘Taking TOEFL for Australia’ when registering for your test."
"Home Edition scores are not currently accepted by the Australian Department of Home Affairs"
So if the test is for a visa, budget for a test centre date and choose Taking TOEFL for Australia when you register. The full visa rules, including the score you need, are on our TOEFL for Australian visas page.
Extra ETS fees
Late registration, rescheduling, score reviews and more.
These are ETS's own extra charges, all in US dollars. You only pay the ones you use.
| Extra, in ETS's own words | Fee in US dollars |
|---|---|
| Express registration (within 7 days of the test date) | US$49 |
| Rescheduling | US$69 |
| Reinstatement of canceled scores | US$20 |
| Additional score reports (per institution or agency) | US$29 each, but see the note below |
| Speaking or Writing Section score review | US$80 |
| Speaking and Writing Section score review | US$160 |
| Returned payment | US$30 |
| Express Scoring | US$129 |
Two prices for extra score reports
ETS gives two different figures for an additional score report. Its fee page says US$29 each. Its scores page says US$25 per institution or agency. We cannot tell which page is newer, so we show both. Check the amount at checkout before you order.
"You can order additional score reports through your ETS account for US$25 per institution/agency."
Working out your own total
Our arithmetic, using ETS's list prices.
Fees add up quickly when a date moves. Here is how the list prices combine for the common cases. Taxes and your card's exchange rate come on top.
| Your situation | What you add up | Total in US dollars |
|---|---|---|
| You book before the regular deadline and sit the test once | Base fee only | 293 |
| You book late and pay express registration | Base fee plus 49 | 342 |
| You book on time and reschedule once | Base fee plus 69 | 362 |
| You book late and reschedule once | Base fee plus 49 plus 69 | 411 |
The last two rows are why the dates matter. The ETS pages we read do not say whether the express fee is charged again if your new date falls inside the express window, so ask ETS before you move a date, and treat these totals as the minimum. Choose a date you can keep, and read the deadlines below before you pay.
Deadlines, changes and refunds
From the ETS Information Bulletin for the 2026 to 2027 year.
ETS's Information Bulletin sets the rules that decide whether you pay extra or get money back. The edition we read says its policies are in effect from July 2026 through June 2027.
| Rule | What the Bulletin says |
|---|---|
| Regular online registration | Closes 7 full days before the test date. After that you pay the express fee. |
| Express online registration | Closes 2 days before the test date. |
| Reschedule or cancel | Do it at least 4 full days before your test date. If ETS does not get your request 4 days ahead, your test fee is not refunded. |
| Refund if you cancel in time | ETS refunds 50% of the original test fee if you cancel by the 4-day deadline. |
| Retakes | No limit on how many times you take the test, but not more than once in a 3-day period. |
| Arriving at a test centre | Be there at least 30 minutes before your assigned start time. |
The easiest way to reschedule or cancel is through your ETS account, and the Bulletin also gives a phone route for rescheduling. The Bulletin says test appointments cannot be rescheduled or cancelled by regular mail or email, or at the test centre.
What your fee already covers
Score reports, payment and how long the result lasts.
- Up to four free score reports go to recipients you add in your ETS account. ETS's scores page says you can add them until 10 p.m. on the day of your test, but its Information Bulletin says until 10pm, local test centre time, on the day before your test, and that ETS charges a fee for each report after that. Add your recipients the day before.
- ETS says scores for the standard TOEFL iBT appear in your ETS account about 3 days after your test date. Its Information Bulletin says TOEFL iBT Australia scores are posted approximately 4-8 days after you take the test, so allow for that if you register with Taking TOEFL for Australia.
- ETS says your scores are valid for 2 years. Home Affairs sets its own limit on how old a test can be for a visa, so check our TOEFL for Australian visas page. PDF score reports are ready 1 day after you get your electronic scores.
When you register through your ETS account, ETS says you can pay by credit or debit card, e-check, PayPal or Alipay.
"ETS account: Credit/debit card, electronic check (e-check), PayPal® or Alipay®"
How the fee compares with the other tests Australia accepts
Each owner prices in its own currency. We do not convert.
The TOEFL is one of several tests on Home Affairs' list, so the fee is only half of the decision. For PTE Academic, Pearson's own price list shows AU$499.00. For IELTS, IDP IELTS Australia says: "The cost for an IELTS English test in Australia is $490." Its article adds that most test centres charge $490 and that regional centres might charge a bit more. That page does not name the currency.
| Test | Fee as its owner states it |
|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT, Australia | US$293 (ETS) |
| PTE Academic, Australia | AU$499.00 (Pearson) |
| IELTS, Australia | $490 at most test centres (IDP IELTS Australia, currency not named on the page) |
US dollars and Australian dollars are different currencies, so do not compare the two figures as if they were. Our PTE test fees page has Pearson's full list, and PTE against IELTS compares the other two.
Discounts and vouchers
What ETS publishes, and what it does not.
The only discount on ETS's fee page is a Fee Reduction Service for high school seniors in the United States with financial need. Its voucher covers 50% of the regular test fee. It is not for test takers in Australia.
"The TOEFL Fee Reduction Service is designed for high school seniors in the United States with financial need who are applying to colleges and universities where TOEFL scores are recommended or required."
We do not list discount codes, and we cannot vouch for sites that do. Book on ETS's own registration page.
