PTE test centres in Australia: how to find one, and what to do for the Gold Coast, Cairns and Townsville

Last verified 3 Oct 2026 against pearsonpte.com, pearsonpte.com, pearsonpte.com
SHORT ANSWER

Pearson says its Australian test centres are in cities including Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane and Canberra, and that you find your nearest centre by entering where you want to test on its booking finder. We cannot confirm from Pearson's pages whether the Gold Coast, Cairns or Townsville has a centre, so this page shows you how to check and what to plan for if you have to travel.

The public Pearson pages we read do not list individual PTE test centres. Its finder shows centres and open dates after you enter a location, and the results depend on the dates that are open. So we do not list centres here, because a list we copied could be wrong. We show you what Pearson says, how to use its finder, and what the centre rules mean for planning a trip. Gold Coast, Cairns and Townsville have a section of their own further down.

Where Pearson says its Australian centres are

Named cities, and a finder for the rest.

SOURCE, VERBATIM
"Our test centers are located in cities across Australia, including Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane and Canberra."
Pearson says: pearsonpte.com

The word 'including' matters. It means the six cities are examples, not the full list. Pearson sends you to its finder for the rest:

SOURCE, VERBATIM
"Find the test center location that suits you best, plus PTE Academic fees."
Pearson says: pearsonpte.com
SOURCE, VERBATIM
"Select a country from the dropdown menu to see local test fees and locate the nearest test centers."
Pearson says: pearsonpte.com

Pearson's booking guide explains the finder step by step. This is the part that decides which centre you can book:

SOURCE, VERBATIM
"First, enter where you’d like to take the test."
Pearson says: pearsonpte.com
SOURCE, VERBATIM
"We’ll then provide a list of available test centers. Choose a center and select a date and time at least 24 hours in advance, then click on 'Book'."
Pearson says: pearsonpte.com

So the list you see depends on the place you type and the dates that are open. Try your own suburb or town first, then the nearest big city, then a few different weeks. For the full booking steps see how to book PTE in Australia.

PTE in the Gold Coast, Cairns and Townsville

What we can and cannot tell you.

If you live on the Gold Coast or in North Queensland, the first question is usually whether you will have to travel for PTE. Here is what we can say honestly.

Pearson's public Australia page names six cities and does not name the Gold Coast, Cairns or Townsville. That does not prove there is no centre there, because Pearson says the list is ‘including’ those six. Pearson's finder starts by asking you to enter where you would like to take the test, then lists the available centres. We cannot see its results for a specific date and place, so we will not tell you a centre exists or does not.

OUR ORIGINAL EXAMPLE, NOT FROM A TEST OWNER
  • If the finder shows nothing near you, type the next largest city. Our reading, from the map and not from Pearson: of the six cities Pearson names, Brisbane is the nearest to all three places.
  • A centre that exists can still be full. Check different weeks before you decide to travel.

If the finder offers a centre only in another city, you have a travel decision to make. The rest of this page covers what Pearson's rules mean for that trip.

What happens at the centre

Arrival, ID and who is in the room.

Pearson describes the centres as small, which matters if you are nervous about a crowded room:

SOURCE, VERBATIM
"PTE tests are taken on a computer at one of our test centers, where there are usually about 10–15 people taking their test together."
Pearson says: pearsonpte.com
SOURCE, VERBATIM
"Most of our test centers are small, with around 10 seats in each center."
Pearson says: pearsonpte.com

Arrival time

SOURCE, VERBATIM
"You must arrive at least 30 minutes before your test and sign in at the test center reception. If you arrive late you will not be allowed to take the test and you will lose your test fee."
Pearson's test centre rules say: pearsonpte.com

Pearson's test day page puts the same rule more gently:

SOURCE, VERBATIM
"You will need to arrive half an hour before your test to check in securely and get ready for your test."
Pearson says: pearsonpte.com

Check-in and ID

Pearson says the administrator will do the following to confirm who you are:

  • request to see your ID and check the details on your ID exactly match your booking (you should check to ensure these details are correct before test day)
  • take a digital photograph of you.
  • ask for your digital signature.
  • scan the palm of your hand.
SOURCE, VERBATIM
"Make sure you bring acceptable ID – this should be your passport. Without it, you can’t take your test."
Pearson says: pearsonpte.com
SOURCE, VERBATIM
"If your account details do not match your passport, you will not be allowed to take the test and will not be eligible for a refund. If needed, you can correct your account details up to 3 days before your test."
Pearson says: pearsonpte.com

In the room

  • Your things go in secure storage that you cannot open until the test is over.
  • You will be monitored throughout, and Pearson says video and audio will be recorded.
  • You sit in a booth with a computer and headset. Pearson says the keyboard is QWERTY, and it recommends practising on one if you are not used to it.
  • Pearson says you have two hours for PTE Academic.

The items Pearson does not allow in the test room include phones, electronic devices and digital watches. See Pearson's own page for the full list before you pack.

If you have to travel for your test

Plan the trip around Pearson's rules.

Pearson's date-change rules decide how risky it is to book travel early. Here are the rules that matter, in Pearson's words:

SOURCE, VERBATIM
"You can usually reschedule or cancel your appointment for free if there are at least 14 full calendar days left before your test. After this time, there will be a fee."
Pearson says: pearsonpte.com

Pearson's page says “at least 14 full calendar days” in that first line, and “more than 14 full calendar days” in the rules under it. Those rules also say that with 14 days or less left you cannot reschedule and must cancel and book a new appointment. So make any change with more than 14 full calendar days left, and treat day 14 as too late.

If you cancelWhat Pearson says
More than 14 full calendar days beforeIf you cancel more than 14 full calendar days before your test, you will receive a full refund.
Between 14 and 7 full calendar days beforeIf you cancel between 14 and 7 full calendar days before your test, you will receive a 50% refund.
7 days or fewer beforeNo refunds will be provided if there are 7 calendar days, or less, left before your test.
SOURCE, VERBATIM
"If you are unable to attend the test center on the day of your test because of illness or family emergency, Pearson may, at its discretion, allow you to reschedule the test free of charge."
Pearson says about emergencies: pearsonpte.com

For the test fee, here is what Pearson's price list for Australia showed when we read it:

SOURCE, VERBATIM
"PTE Academic | AU$ 499.00 AUD"
Pearson's Australian price list shows: pearsonpte.com
SOURCE, VERBATIM
"Fetched: 2026-10-03 for country AU"
The price file header says: pearsonpte.com

Travel and accommodation are on top of that. Our PTE test fees page has the fee detail. This page is not immigration advice, and Pearson's own pages decide the rules.

OUR ORIGINAL EXAMPLE, NOT FROM A TEST OWNER

Our checklist for a trip, in order:

OUR ORIGINAL EXAMPLE, NOT FROM A TEST OWNER
  1. Confirm a seat in the finder, on a date when you can travel.
  2. Book the test first and travel second, and leave the flights until you are sure of the date. Aim for 15 or more full calendar days to spare, so a change stays clear of the cancellation rules above.
  3. Plan to arrive in the city the day before, so a delayed flight or bus does not cost you the test fee.
  4. Choose lodging close to the centre or on a direct route, and look up the route in advance.
  5. Check your passport matches your booking exactly, and correct it at least 3 days before.
  6. Practise typing on a QWERTY keyboard if you usually use a phone.
  7. Pack only what you need. Leave phones, watches and bags in your room if you can.

Common questions

Pearson says its Australian test centres are in cities across Australia, including Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane and Canberra. Use Pearson's finder to see the full list for your area.

We cannot confirm that from Pearson's public pages. Pearson names six cities with the word 'including', so the list may be longer. Type 'Gold Coast' into Pearson's booking finder: it shows the centres and dates that are open.

We cannot confirm that from Pearson's public pages. Check Pearson's finder by typing Cairns. If nothing shows, try Brisbane and plan the trip around Pearson's cancellation rules.

We cannot confirm that from Pearson's public pages. Check Pearson's finder by typing Townsville. If nothing shows, try Brisbane and book your travel only after the test seat is confirmed.

Pearson says you must arrive at least 30 minutes before your test, and that if you arrive late you will not be allowed to take the test and will lose your test fee.

Pearson says to bring acceptable ID and that this should be your valid passport; without it you cannot take your test. Its identification policy says the ID must be valid, issued no more than 10 years ago and the same ID you selected when you booked, and the name, date of birth, citizenship and gender must match your booking exactly. It must be the physical document: digital IDs, copies and photocopies are not accepted, and neither are temporary versions. If you cannot produce the required ID you will not be let into the test room and will lose your test fee. If you cannot provide a passport and are testing in your country of citizenship you may be able to use an alternative ID on Pearson's exceptions list; outside your country of citizenship only a passport is accepted.

Pearson says you can usually reschedule or cancel for free if more than 14 full calendar days are left before your test, although one line on its page says “at least 14”, so treat day 14 as too late. After that there will be a fee, and with 14 days or less left you cannot reschedule and must cancel and book a new appointment. It says a single appointment can be rescheduled a maximum of 6 times.
